DOHA: Qatar Shell Research and Technology Centre (QSRTC), Qatar University (QU) and Imperial College London have signed a research and development agreement on corrosion prevention in wet sour gas pipelines.
The ceremony at QU was attended by Youssif  Saleh,  General Manager, QSRTC, Dr Hassan Al Derham, Vice-President, Research, QU, and Mary Ryan, Professor of Materials Science and Technology, Imperial College London. Corrosion of pipelines transporting sour oil and gas streams is a technical challenge facing the oil and gas industry in Qatar. The research will use state-of-the-art analytical techniques to focus on mechanisms to prevent corrosion and extend pipelines’ life and durability.
Dr Al Derham said. “The deal with Qatar Shell which is focused on understanding scaling and corrosion in sour gas pipelines, aligns with QU’s research priorities and is integral to Qatar’s vision of becoming a knowledge-based society where research plays a vital role in resolving emerging issues, especially concerning the oil and gas industry, the country’s main source of revenue for development.”
Saleh said, “In line with Qatar National Vision 2030, Qatar Shell is committed to identifying research collaborations to address challenges impacting our business, that bring together coalitions involving key local research institutions, and which offer opportunity for direct applicability for the benefit of Qatar.”
