DOHA: The Cultural Village Foundation - Katara and the Netherlands embassy are mulling to stage Avicenna, the first Arab-produced opera written in Arabic.
The opera which premiered in Doha in 2003 is based on the life of Ibn Sina, one of the most significant thinkers and writers of the Islamic Golden Age in the fields of medicine, mathematics, astronomy and philosophy.
Katara General Manager Dr Khaled bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti yesterday met Dutch Ambassador Yvette Burghgraef-van Eechoud to discuss the possibility of staging the opera which was written by prominent Qatari poet Dr Ahmad Al Dosari and composed by award-winning Dutch pianist Michiel Borstlap, who also attended the meeting.
Dr Al Sulaiti stressed Katara’s role as a cultural destination where embassies hold events to enhance cultural cooperation.
“The ambassador has put forth a proposal to hold the opera at Katara. It is a huge global event that will be considered for further study.
“We will do our utmost to provide all facilities once it is approved,” he added.
