Five outstanding breast cancer awareness campaigns held by different organisations in Qatar were honoured in a ceremony held at The Torch Hotel recently. Initiated by The Youth Company (TYC), the ceremony was in partnership with Queen Medical and was powered by the US Embassy in Qatar.
“For the last five years, organisations have been engaging their customers, clients and partners towards breast cancer awareness. It was the right time for us to bring them all together and not only just reward them, but also, help them network among each other, which will give rise to bigger and better campaigns in the upcoming years,” said Aya Abu Issa, Chief Executive Officer of The Youth Company International, while talking to press.
The evening started with opening remarks from Dr Mamdouh Farid, CEO and Founder of Queen Medical. In his speech,
“It is our sole responsibility of educating public the preventative measures that they can take for an efficient and effective health, body and mind,” Dr Farid said.
A series of speakers talked about importance of breast cancer awareness, its early detection and research. Margarita Zuniga from Virginia Commonwealth University, shared how she started raising funds through leading the Ladies of Harley – Qatar chapter. The winner of Youth Got Talent 2013, Taif Elmokadem, gave a musical performance. The forum then heard an inspiring talk from a breast cancer survivor and leader of Hayat Support Group, Amani Halawa.
Dr Shahniza Bedri shared her experience as a professor and researcher at Weil Cornell Medical College in Qatar. The chief guest of the evening was Dr Sheikh Khalid bin Jabor Al Thani, Chairman of the Qatar Cancer Society.
The five awards were then distributed to the winners. The Most Influential Campaign Award 2014 went to College of the North Atlantic–Qatar, The Most Influential Activist Award 2014 was awarded to Margarita Zuniga, Pink Organization Award 2014 went to Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Best Fundraising Event Award 2014 was awarded to Georgetown University Qatar and The Voters’ Choice Award 2014 was given to Ladies of Harley.The Peninsula
