DOHA: A key charitable organisation has taken a novel initiative to distribute free mobile phone cards to several low-income workers so they could call up their families at home and fight home sickness.

According to Al Sharq, Eid Charity has decided to supply cell phone cards of QR100 each to a thousand low-income workers engaged on the Sidra hospital project site.

The beneficiaries are to be identified by the volunteers from among the workers themselves, the daily said. In the first phase of the humanitarian initiative phone cards of QR100 are to be handed to a thousand workers from different nationalities engaged on the Sidra project irrespective of their religious background.

Abdullah Nasser Al Kaabi, a senior official of Eid Charity, told the daily the initiative has five objectives, including helping them fight homesickness by talking to their near and dear ones back home.

“The objective is to ensure community support for the workers and make them feel that the community is with them and wants them to help them alleviate their sufferings,” Al Kaabi was cited as saying.

The charity will identify beneficiaries for its novel largesse and make sure that their salaries are low. The initiative is being launched in close coordination with telecom service provider Qtel, Shafallah Center and Qatar Foundation, the daily said.
