DOHA: Thirty five children aged between six and 12 years attended an educational event for newly diagnosed children with diabetes organised by the Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA) yesterday.

Eighteen school nurses were also invited to the programme, along with three nursing supervisors from the Supreme Council of Health.

Fathiya Al Dhabi, the programme organiser said: “We have been organising this annual event since 2008 to help the newly diagnosed accept the new reality of diabetes and be able to live in a healthy supportive environment at home and in their schools”

An educational workshop was part of the activities that was conducted in a children friendly manner.  “The young cook” was another interesting part of the programme. The students prepared small meals with the QDA dietitians’ help, who explained to them how to prepare a healthy meal and how importance is to follow a healthy diet for the proper care of their diabetes. Parallel to the events, a workshop was organised for the school nurses to discuss ways to improve the care and management for the children with diabetes in the schools.

QDA provided the nurses a manual that help formulate that care plan at the school for diabetic children. The children’s cultural center offered an hour of fun-filled activities to the kids and gifts were distributed to all participants.
