Doha: Minister of Environment and Climate Change H E Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ali Al Thani has said that Qatar is close to achieve the target of its Plant Million Tree initiative.
The Minister was addressing the high-level segment (HLS) of the meetings of the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) to the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions (BRS Triple COP) yesterday.
“Qatar as host of FIFA World Cup 2022 will make this mega sporting event carbon neutral and eco-friendly. We reached close to achieve target of our initiative ‘Plant Million Tree’ by World Cup. We will build on it the coming initiative Plant 10 Millions Trees by 2030 which was announced earlier,” said the Minister.
The Minister, in his speech shared by the Ministry on its social networking sites, said that environment protection is a collective responsibility of all, which requires enhancing international cooperation and measures in this regard.
“We in Qatar made environmental development within our top priorities following Qatar National Vision 2030 which includes environment development one of its four pillars,” said the Minister.
To turn the vision into reality, he said: “We merged environmental dimension, strategic development and our national plans and programmes.”
He said that National Strategy for Environment and Climate Change of Qatar was launched last year which focuses on measures to protect the environment and ensure its sustainability.
“Qatar recently announced the decision of banning single used plastic bags in the country and encouraged the uses of alternative eco-friendly bags,” said the Minister.
H E the Minister said that this is part of a several of achievements made in Qatar to protect the environment. “Last year we launched National Action Plan for Climate Change which ensures our determination and ambition to fight against climate change on national and international levels,” said the Minister.
He said that Qatar had announced $100m contribution to support the least developed countries and small island developing states, to deal with climate change and environment challenges in climate change conference in 2019.
The event hosted ministers from around the world to explore opportunities and promote solutions to address the triple environmental crisis of pollution, climate change and biodiversity loss by achieving the goals of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm agreements.
The objective of the high-level segment is to provide an interactive, dynamic and inclusive platform for ministers to exchange experiences and provide political leadership for a renewed commitment to implementing the three conventions.
It also aims to increase political awareness and support for the agreements, as well as encourage dialogue between ministers of partner countries.
