The winter vegetable farmers’ markets have sold 5,113 tonnes of vegetables, 919 tonnes of fruit and over 142 tonnes of fish in 2016/2017 season, according to report issued by the Agricultural Affairs Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, yesterday.
There are three such markets — Al Mazrouah, Al Khor and Dakhira and Al Wakra — which started selling products in October 2016 to and closed at the end of April this year
The markets offered a wide variety of vegetables and poultry products sourced from Qatari farms at attractive prices. They provide an opportunity for farmers to sell their products directly to customers without intervention from middlemen.
The highest proportion of fruit sale was 181 tonnes in December, while the highest proportion of vegetable sale was 1,170 tonnes in March.
The highest proportion of fish sale — 29.8 tonnes — was in March, and the lowest came in October.
