DOHA: A charity dinner and auction of over 20 lots of artworks and collectibles donated by Qatari and international artists and donors will be held today at Grand Hyatt Doha.
To be conducted by Christie’s, the event ‘A Night for Nepal’ is expected to collect around QR2m for Nepal earthquake victims.
A jewellery box designed by Queen Elizabeth’s nephew and Christie’s Chairman David Linley, a famous furniture maker, will be among the pieces to go under the hammer.
A painting by prominent Qatari artist Yousef Ahmad will also be auctioned, along with artworks of others, said Fahad Al Obaidly of Qatar-based volunteer group, All for One, organisers of the event.
Not-for-profit organisations Qatar Charity (QC), Educate A Child (EAC) — a programme of Education Above All (EAA), and Reach Out To Asia (ROTA) have joined hands for the event.
Funds will augment QC’s relief programmes in Nepal providing food, shelter and medical supplies; strengthen ROTA’s emergency education support, rebuild damaged schools and support long-term goals of EAC.
The event will feature entertainment, including performances by world-renowned pianist Sonja Park and DNA Records’ recent work as well as cultural items by embassies and students of International Academy for Intercultural Development.
The event will also raise funds through corporate sponsorship and donor passes, which can be bought by individuals and organisations.
“EAA is grateful to ‘All for One’ initiative for bringing together our three organisations in support of an issue of timely importance.
“In addition to human toll, the devastating long lasting effects on the education system will be highly disrupting for Nepal’s children, and we hope to provide some relief by facilitating their access to quality primary education,” said Fahad Al Sulaiti, Deputy CEO, EAA.
“For many years ROTA has been engaged with people and partners in Nepal in our mission to increase their access to quality primary and secondary education.
“We believe that education is a right and through our work  we aim to ensure access to education for the most needy and we have been doing this for the past decade,” said Mohamed Al Naama, Acting Executive Director, ROTA.
