Mutaz Barshim named best athlete in Asia in 2017

Prague: Olympic and world champion Mutaz Issa Barshim was named the 2017 Best Athlete in Asia by the National Olympic Committee (ANOC) on Thursday. The awards ceremony was held in the Czech capital of Prague on the sidelines of the General Assembly of the National Olympic Committees and awards were given to the best athletes in all continents along with awards for the best national Olympic committees.
With his victory today, Barshim continues to fly the golden falcon of Qatar in the skies of international sport, adding a great achievement to his record of championships and medals.
Barshim, a world champion and Olympic medalist, is in tremendous form winning many prestigious tournaments including the World Championship in London.
In August, Barshim won the world title in London. In August 2016, he won the silver at the Rio Olympic Games. In 2014, Barshim grabbed the gold at the World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland.
Barshim’s historic feat in London was followed by a series of top performances this season, including a world leading 2.40-metre jump at the Birmingham Muller Grand Prix just a week later. He also went on to finish as the top star of the 2017 Diamond League season with five wins.
Later in Eberstadt, Germany, he once again cleared the 2.40m mark for the 11th occasion in his career.
"I am very proud of the work I have done and I thank all those who supported me. Individual athlete needs a lot of support. I thank the State, my family and everyone who help me to win, it is for Qatar and not for me alone .. I thank my coach for his great work and thank you all," Barshim said.
Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, Second Vice President of the Qatar Olympic Committee and Chairman of Qatar Athletics Federation, praised Barshim for his achievements. He said it reflected his talent and high standing among his fellow international athletes.
"He was able to challenge the difficulties and rise of the podiums and reach the summit," he added.
For his part, Mohammed Al-Fadala, Secretary General of the Qatar Athletics Federation, expressed his pride over the outstanding achievement of the champion Barshim and praised him for winning the award for the best athletes in Asia.
