DOHA: Qatar University (QU) has launched a new programme ‘Ana Ighati’ (I Relieve) to support the Syrian refugees and raise awareness among students about relief work and facing disasters.
The programme is conducted by Social Work and Volunteer Center at QU in cooperation with Qatar Charity’s Local Development Department. The inaugural ceremony took place in the conference hall of the Faculty of Education.
“The purpose of the programme is to bring in as much support as possible for the Syrian refugees, make use of youth’s helping spirit, and of the free time university students have for voluntary work,” said a statement yesterday.
QC and QU are expected to sign a cooperation and partnership agreement soon.
Students will collect donations inside and outside campus. About QR3,000 has been set as a budget for each team to implement relief campaigns whose outcome will be announced on Global Day of Volunteering in QU on December 3. Two training courses were held as part of the programme by Mohammed Ardor, QC’s Director of Relief and Emergencies. He discussed the managing disasters and urgent relief responses, preparing for the occurrence of a disaster and means to facing it, and results.
He also spoke about current circumstances of the Syrian refugees and displayed some of the projects implemented for them.
A disaster requires the announcement of an emergency after the occurrence of a certain number of deaths or financial losses.
There are four types of disasters: Natural, man-made, slow-onset, and sudden disasters. The lecturer also explained their results which he divided into: severe, slight, rare, regular and average.
He, then, displayed the development of humanitarian work and the factors behind it. The first reason was the need for such work and the last was the right of receiving aids. As a result of such development, a new science called Disaster Science appeared and is now taught at universities.
The lecturer explained the stages of disaster and concentrated on ‘Emergency’ which he defined as the unusual circumstance which results in real threat to human life.
The speaker showed the students some relief projects.
