DOHA: Inspectors from the Ministry of Environment have caught a person red-handed when he was trying to sell a chimpanzee.
The animal seized from the person’s possession has been sent to Doha Zoo, a statement issued by the ministry said yesterday.
The ministry received a tip-off that a person was trading in endangered animals and was keeping a chimp at his home in Al Aziziya. Officials verified information by tracking social media accounts of the person and discovered that the tip-off was correct.
They sought permission from the Prosecution Department of the Ministry of Environment and, in collaboration with Lekhwiya (Internal Security Force), laid a trap to catch the person red-handed. They zeroed in on him and caught him red-handed, the statement said, adding the animal has been sent to the zoo.
The ministry said it is illegal to keep wild animals at home, show to people and walk them in public.
