Doha: Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah has welcomed the committee’s cooperation with the US State Department in promoting and protecting human rights.
She pointed out that the NHRC, since its inception, has been based on exchanging expertise, experiences and best practices in various fields of human rights with various relevant authorities at home and abroad.
This came during a meeting of NHRC Chairperson with US Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Uzra Zeya and Special Advisor on International Disability Rights Sara Minkara, and the accompanying delegation, in the presence of the Ambassador of the United States of America to Qatar H E Timmy T Davis.
Dr. Muhammad bin Saif Al Kuwari, Vice-Chairman of the NHRC, directors of departments and officials of the committee also attended the meeting.
Al Attiyah gave a detailed explanation about the role of the NHRC and its contributions to legislative developments in the national laws in the country. She pointed out that the committee contributed to making many reforms, including the Wage Protection System, the Workers’ Support and Insurance Fund, andthe formation of the Dispute Resolution Committee to achieve justice and equity.
Al Attiyah said that the Ministry of Labour is making great efforts to protect workers, the most recent of which was its opening yesterday Humanitarian Care Home. She added that the NHRC closely monitors the state’s achievements in terms of protecting and promoting human rights.
Al Attiyah said that Qatar has become the only country in the region in which a worker can change his workplace without referring to the first employer, but added that there are still challenges related to raising awareness of these reforms at the level of workers, employers and Qatari society.
Uzra Zeya said that her work with the Ministry is concerned with human rights and the achievement of human dignity. She said: “We have many goals that share with what is put forward in Qatar National Vision 2030 and related to investing in human resources. I am here to activate these common goals between us.”
