DOHA: The first phase of electronic link between the customs departments of Qatar and Saudi Arabia has been launched at the third meeting of customs departments of two countries held here yesterday.
The project aims to help Qatar and Saudi Arabia exchange electronic data for the movements of vehicles between Abu Samra customs in Qatar and Salwa customs in Saudi Arabia, Qatar News Agency reported yesterday.
“The remaining phases of the electronic link will be launched soon in a bid to exchange the information about all works and procedures for both sides of the customs,” said Director General of Qatar Customs Department, Ahmad bin Ali Al Muhannadi.
“The customs directors of Abu Samra and Salwa will meet on monthly basis to discuss latest developments and try to solve customs-related problems quickly,” said Al Muhannadi.
“The second phase of the project is pertaining to exchange details of goods and consignments and it is expected to launch within next two months,” said Saleh bin Mani Al Khaliwi, Director of Customs Department of Saudi Arabia.
“The third and final phase of the project is expected to take four months to complete once the agreement is singed to exchange the information about transit goods,” said Al Khaliwi.
Both countries are working out to train its workforce to handle the new customs system and set up laboratories at check-posts to improve their customs services.
