Hamad Hospital is teeming with physicians, hence, among them, the excellent, the medium and the frail, and I’ll not speak now about these levels and not for the interest of the state to economise and provide all modern devices for patient comfort, which may not be available in most hospitals of the world, but we don’t have distinguished experience to deal with these devices.
Today, I’ll talk about the culture of a doctor, his humanity, and the difference between a doctor in Qatar and a doctor outside Qatar, and in the countries to which we send our patients, while you are in the hands of the doctor, then he explain to you every small and large thing, and what does he want to do for you accurately and in details and gives you a chance to ask him what do you want. If you have a surgical operation he says to you that he will do so and he will make a dissection or an incision here and the wound by this mode etc. Small details, which some people believe are not that important, but the patient needs to know it with all its details, even the percentage of the success of the operation, the doctor tells it to you, because it is considered as one of the things which is important for the patient.
On the other hand, most of our doctors in the hospital that you get admitted to do not tell you about the ailment. Sometimes you don’t know why medication has been exchanged for you nor its effects and the extent of its interaction with other drugs and you don’t find the right time and opportunity to ask for your case, because the doctor may not care about you or doesn’t answer your questions as he deals with so many people and considers himself to be a higher being. He might be surprised when he finds the patient asking him, and he might consider it a waste of his time, because he has dozens of patients waiting, and he doesn’t know that the patient has the right to ask questions and that is the culture that raises the level of quality in hospitals. But some doctors are busy with something else — either sifting papers in a file or engrossed in the computer to see old analyses that you don’t care about while you are talking to him. And he is not with you and some of them don’t cost himself even to examine you, and all that hastiness from some doctors in dealing with patients, that make the patient to lose focus with what accompany that matter from the nurse’ entry and going out for thousand time, like you are sitting in an assembly and not in a doctor’s room in addition to knocking the door, and one patient enters to inquire about something and another one hastens his turn. And when you are in the hospital more than one doctor comes to examine you, and everyone says something, and sometimes you don’t know anything from the doctors, and you refer to asking the nurses and the nurses give you a (formal) legal opinion including what they know and what they don’t know, and if you determine to know complete answer from a doctor, contacting another doctor will be done, then he says to you: possible to have this or possible you have inflammation, and possible to know better from your doctor on the next day, i.e., he can’t give you right answer, and if you want to become aware of your file you are not allowed to do that, I don’t know why he didn’t allow you to become aware of your file, as it has nuclear secrets, but if the patient in a critical condition or he can’t ask by himself about his case, this means that his family or relatives will get lost between this and that.
That behaviour and other in subsidiary hospitals of Hamad Hospital made many Qataris to leave these hospitals to the hospitals which provide them more care and attention inside or outside Qatar, even though some people clash that he find in front of him queues who distract them health insurance and get the best care in Qatar and Qatari citizen pays.
O professional doctors, requesting you to apply all what you have studied and what you learned in your conferences and seminars that taking history of the disease and knowing everything about the patient and explaining all the details to him are the most important specifications and standards of a successful doctor.
