Qatar’s ports have delivered impressive performance in June by registering a strong rise in cargo handling. Hamad Port, Ruwais Port and Doha Port handled 176,439 tonnes of general cargo in June this year compared to May 2021, registering a significant rise of around 53 percent. These ports have also seen a healthy rise in cargo handling on year-on-year basis.
“Cargo and container throughput at Mwani Qatar jumped 12 percent and 9 percent, respectively, in June 2021 compared to the same period last year. RORO volumes, Building Materials and Vessels saw an increase of 82 percent, 48 percent and 26 percent,” said Mwani Qatar on its official twitter account.
According to Mwani Qatar, the ports handled 130,815 TEUs containers; 176,439 tonnes general cargo; 2,622 livestock heads; 32,142 tonnes building materials and 5,927 units of vehicles during last month. The ports had handled 115,626 tonnes of general cargo; 6,663 units of vehicles and 9,273 livestock heads in May this year. A total of 304 ships docked at these ports during last month.
Hamad Port, Qatar’ gateway to world trade, occupied major share in the total cargo handling. The port handled 129,640 TEUs containers and 103,947 break-bulk cargo in June 2021. It also handled 5,811 units of vehicles during the month. Total 137 vessels docked at the port last month.
Hamad Port is helping in diversifying country’s economy. Along with general cargo traffic, the port handles a variety of specialist imports including livestock, automobiles, and bulk grain. While Hamad Port has become Qatar’s gateway to world trade, Ruwais Port is also playing a vital role in stimulating country’s economy. The port has cemented its position as the alternate gateway for country’s maritime trade. The port has become one of the most important ports to meet the increasing needs of the domestic market of foodstuff, meat and fresh and chilled products.
The impressive monthly performance by the maritime sector follows all-round performance shown by the ports in the first quarter of this year. The ports of Qatar have witnessed a surge of 69 percent in cargo handling in first quarter of 2021 compared to same period last year.
Hamad Port, Ruwais Port and Doha Port handled 411,132 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) containers; 462,570 tonnes general cargo; 105,492 livestock heads; 198,950 tonnes building materials and 19,729 units of vehicles from January to March this year. A total of 747 ships docked at these ports in three months. Qatari ports are functioning smoothly despite challenges posed by the outbreak of COVID-19.
