The bicameral Commission on Appointments (CA) confirmed yesterday the appointment of former House of Representative Senior Majority Leader Janette L. Garin as Department of Health (DOH) secretary.

The CA, during its plenary session yesterday presided over by Senate President Franklin M. Drilon, also confirmed the appointments of 58 officers of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) led by six ambassadors.

The CA and Congress prepare to adjourn sine die on June 11.

The confirmation of Garin, an Iloilo representative for nine years, came after she read a prepared statement outlining her health-related programs and a recollection by congressmen-CA members of how she helped victims of bombing incident at the House of Representatives a few years ago.

Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus B. Rodriguez, vice chairman of the CA health committee, said the DoH is in good hands under the leadership of Garin.

He then asked CA members to give their affirmative votes to Garin as there was no official objection to her confirmation.

After her confirmation, Garin thanked the CA for giving their vote of confidence in her capability to run the DOH and to President Aquino for appointing her to implement his administration’s health program until the President’s six-year tenure which ends on June 30, 2016.

She brushed off queries on whether or not she would run in the 2016 election.
