Doha: As part of works to upgrade intersections and convert roundabouts into signal-controlled intersections to enhance traffic and reduce congestion in major areas, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced the commencement of phase one works to convert Civil Defence Roundabout into a signal-controlled intersection, on the sides of the road on Al Istiqlal Street and Mohammed Bin Thani Street.
All lanes will remain open to traffic in all directions, as shown in the map. The first phase lasts until June 23, in coordination with the Traffic Department.
Phase two will begin in the last week of June and include temporary closure of one lane in both directions on both streets.
Two lanes of the road and the roundabout will remain open to traffic and the closure will last until mid-September.
Works to convert the roundabout into a signal-controlled intersection are part of the fifth phase of the intersections and roundabouts development project in several areas under Doha Municipality.
The project includes developing Medical City Intersection by adding an additional lane to turn left for those coming from Civil Defence Intersection to Hamad Medical City and an additional lane to turn left for those coming from Sports Roundabout towards Television Roundabout, to increase the road capacity.
Ashghal will install signs to advise motorists and has urged road users to abide by speed limits and follow signs for their and others’ safety.
