Doha: Ooredoo’s Chief Executive Officer Waleed Al Sayed yesterday announced that the company will support Al Galayel Championship for the third year running, as the traditional event is set to start this week.
The championship is a regional hunting tournament where 17 teams compete in the southern nature reserves of Qatar in contests that showcase traditional skills.
The event from tomorrow until March 3  welcomes a broad cross-section of hunting teams from all over the region and plays a key role in conservation.
Pre-approved animals are marked by the tournament’s organising committee to distinguish from those animals protected in the nature reserves, and the event contributes to the preservation of the local ecosystem.
Al Sayed told a press conference at the company’s HQ1: “The championship for hunting is considered one of the most important tournaments in Qatar, and promotes the exciting history of traditional Qatari hunting.
“These methods of hunting have been passed down for generations and are an important part of Qatari culture, which is why we have continued our sponsorship for the event in 2016.”
Khalid bin Mohammed Al Maadeed, Chairman, Al Galayel Championship, said: “We’re proud to be supported by Ooredoo and thank the company for helping us carry on Qatar’s traditions.
This year’s tournament is set to be the biggest yet, with teams from across the region travelling to take part.”
Ooredoo’s sponsorship is part of its wider work in promoting Qatar’s history and national identity.
Last month it sponsored the Hejen Racing Festival held at Al Shahaniya Camel Racetrack.
