Flag procession by Grade 5 students from Qatar Academy signals the start of THIMUN Qatar.
DOHA: Qatar Shell signed a five-year sponsorship agreement to support The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) Qatar.
This partnership programme between Qatar Academy, Qatar Foundation and the THIMUN Foundation is an annual event and brings together high school students from around Qatar and the Middle East region, helping them to develop as leaders.
“THIMUN touches the Human and Social pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030 through its focus on education, team-work, and leadership. It is making a real difference by equipping young people with the skills and knowledge to be part of a global community of nations. We are delighted to extend our partnership with THIMUN Qatar for the next five years,” said Rob Sherwin, Deputy Country Chairman for Qatar Shell.
Maha Al Romaihi, Assistant Principal of Qatar Academy said: “The mission of THIMUN Qatar is to provide students from various countries and backgrounds the opportunity to practise tolerance, live together in peace and to seek solutions through dialogue to the various challenges facing the world.”
Almost 1,100 student delegates from countries across the region attended the conference that was held at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC). The event began with a grand opening ceremony in which hundreds of students performed in front of distinguished guests including the Attorney General of Qatar, Dr Ali bin Fetais Al Marri who was the keynote speaker.
Over the next three days the student delegates will be given the opportunity to attend hour-long sessions with international experts where they will debate global topics, enabling them to learn about issues such as good governance, human rights, security, finance and the environment. Participants can then ask questions and share their views on developments happening worldwide.
THIMUN is run on a student leadership model which encourages participants to get involved in every aspect of the planning, organisation and implementation of the conference’s various programmes. This proactive involvement by the students in THIMUN helps them acquire leadership skills, increases their confidence and gives them the opportunity to network and make new friends. Based in Qatar Academy, THIMUN Qatar is the third THIMUN Conference to be established after the Hague and Singapore, and serves to develop the burgeoning Model United Nations movement in the Middle East.
