Doha: Katara Cultural Village is set to host a wide range of activities for the upcoming National Sport Day.
Several sports federations will hold events at Katara. Those interested will be able to avail of opportunities such as those provided by the Qatar Sailing and Rowing Federation (QSRF), which will host canoeing practice sessions between 8am and 4pm. Qatar Athletics Federation (QAF) will organise fun runs between 10am and noon. Free cycling facility will be provided by the Qatar Cycling Federation (QCF) from 11am to 4pm.
People inclined towards team sports will enjoy 3x3 competition and demonstrations organised by the Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) throughout the day and a handball action at the mini-court and fun goal set up by the National Handball Federation (NHF), are available between 9am and 5pm. The Qatar Table Tennis Federation (QTTF) will host free practice sessions between 9am and 5pm in addition to matches throughout the day, while the Qatar Golf Association (QGF) will host mini-golf activities for everyone from early morning till late afternoon.
For those looking for physical challenge, the Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Federation will host a show after 1pm, alongside competitions organised by the Qatar Wrestling Federation. The Boxing Federation will feature various activities throughout the day.
The Chess Federation will also host games between 9am and 5pm for people who wish to exercise brain rather than brawn.
Activities at Katara will not be limited to national federations. Private institutions are also participating in the rich list of events.
Katara itself will open its beach soccer pitches to the public between 9am and 5pm, whereas aerobic classes will take place between 10am and 4pm. The Childhood Centre will take care of the young visitors – and their parents – with family activities throughout the day, while aHamad Medical Corporation unit will tap into traditional village games such as egg-and-spoon and sack races from early in the morning.
There will be also activities set by the Primary Health Corporation and Ihssan.
The day is celebrated every second Tuesday of February and is an initiative adopted by the Heir Apparent H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
