Doha: Kahramaa has achieved multiple successes in upgrading electricity and water networks, developing strategic water reserves, developing strategic management systems, and providing quality services to its customers while maintaining the highest standards of health, safety, and environment in 2017.

During the year 2017, Kahramaa launched several initiatives and won a number of local, regional and international awards for its clear strategy, objectives.

Kahramaa has not been affected by the factors of the blockade. Kahramaa has succeeded in moving ahead with the implementation of strategic and vital projects according to the planned schedule and the highest standards of quality and overcoming the siege factors by fulfilling our obligations to maintain the sustainability of services and achieving water security and energy security at no additional cost. In the electricity sector, production increased in 2017 to 10,170 megawatts with the entry of the first stage of the production of Umm Al Houl power plant of 1612 MW, the consumption of 7855 MW and the surplus of 2300 MW for emergencies and economic growth.

The project is expected to provide at the end of all stages of the project during the second half of next year (2520) MW of electricity.

With regard to the transmission network, Kahramaa in 2017 upgraded the efficiency of the electrical transmission network through its implementation of maintenance plan as well as saving about QR75m.

In 2017, 60 terrestrial cables and overhead lines for high and high voltage were launched, raising the capacity of the network to meet the increasing demand for energy in line with the development of state projects in all fields.

Kahramaa has succeeded in launching 32 new substations and connecting them to the electrical transmission network without any problems of the transport system and without any interruptions for the subscribers. Technical performance indicators for electricity transmission and distribution networks recorded high levels during 2017.

It succeeded in facing the demand for electricity, which reached its peak in August 2017. There were no electrical failures in the electrical system during the peak period in the summer, where Kahramaa took precautions to reduce the rate of power cuts compared to global rates.

System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) has decreased from 28 minutes per subscriber in 2016 to 26 minutes per subscriber with an improvement of 5.28% in 2017.

During the year 2017, the contracts for the 13th phase of QR 8.3 billion were awarded to a number of vital projects that serve development projects in various regions of the country through the construction of stations and cables, which will help in upgrading the infrastructure of the electricity sector and contribute to achieving the Qatar National Vision 2030.

In 2017, Kahramaa succeeded in inaugurating a number of major stations. Bu Al Hamiz giant power plant was inaugurated with a capacity of 2500 MW and connected to Umm Al Houl power plant. The new substation of Grand Hamad Street, which is part of the eleventh phase of the expansion project of the electric transmission network in the State, was also inaugurated.

In a major achievement of Kahramaa, a line of marine cables was inaugurated to feed the 100-kilometer-long island of Halul Island, the longest submarine cable in the Gulf.

In July, Kahramaa operated the first power plants to feed the Doha Metro, Ras Abu Fantaas, in accordance with the best construction and operational specifications.

Kahramaa strategic plan for Rail service includes 5 substations at a total cost of QR696m.

The year 2017 witnessed tremendous growth in water-related facilities. Kahramaa is implementing a number of projects to upgrade strategic water reserve and secure them to various regions of the country through strategic strategic tanks, pumping stations and transmission lines.

The total production capacity of water reached 454.7 million gallons per day in 2017. The capacity of the water has increased by 15% in the grid. The project is expected to provide 136 million gallons of water by the end of the second half of next year. In terms of quality of drinking water, the General Water Quality Index exceeded the WHO index. Kahramaa also exerted intensive efforts to reduce technical loss of water and reach the best international standards. The technical loss rate fell below 5% by the end of 2017.

As part of Kahramaa’s efforts to increase strategic water reserve, the strategic water reservoirs project, which is considered the backbone of water security in the country, is being implemented in five different locations covering all regions in Umm Salal, Um Baraka, Rawdat Rashid, Abu Nhakhla and Al Thumama.

The project includes 15 water tanks, the largest in the world with a capacity of about 100 million gallons per tank, in addition to the extension of 650 km of water pipes with large diameters of different size linking these reservoirs and desalination plants.

The first stage of the project will raise the storage capacity of about 1400 million gallons of water storage, covering the storage needs until 2026. The final capacity of the project is 2300 million gallons. The first phase of the project is expected to be operational during the first half of 2018. Renovation of drinking water wells has been completed. The main objective of the project is to provide safe water sources for drinking in extreme emergencies and to enhance water security in the country with a reliable natural source to cover the main basic needs.

In October 2017, Kahramaa signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the New Energy and Industrial Development Organization of Japan (NEDO) on the establishment of a pilot project for the advanced desalination system using hot water discharge. The project, to be implemented in Ras Laffan Industrial City. Kahramaa acts as a legislative and regulatory authority for district cooling services in the country, in particular supporting the projects related to the 2022 World Cup and Qatar National Vision 2030.

By 2017, 11 million cubic meters of potable water had been reduced as a result of the use of treated wastewater as an alternative. By 2030, savings are expected to reach 520 million cubic meters.

As a result of the use of district cooling plants, 5 billion cubic feet of natural gas consumption has been reduced in 2017 and is expected to reach 380 billion cubic feet by 2030, in addition to reducing about 350,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, 2030 to 30 million tons.

The National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed) has been “rationalized” by the generous patronage of the Emir HH Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani since Kahramaa launched it in April 2012. The program aims to reduce the per capita consumption of electricity by 25% and water by 35% until 2022.

In the five years since its establishment, Tarsheed has achieved a reduction of 18 per cent in electricity consumption and 20 per cent in water. This reduction in consumption has resulted in a saving of QR3.8bn and 212,000 cubic feet of natural gas. It has also contributed to the reduction of carbon emissions in the State of Qatar by 8.5 million tonnes.

The year 2017 marked the official opening of Kahramaa Awareness Park last April as a unique science platform in the world. The park received more than 25,000 visitors from all sectors of the country, especially the education sector. Kahramaa Awareness Park is the only building in Qatar that uses 3 different sources of renewable energy: solar, wind and thermal.

The year 2017 witnessed a significant development in Kahramaa Smart Services, in line with Kahramaa’s transformation into a smart enterprise that transforms all transactions and services offered to customers to 100% e-services at the highest levels of efficiency, through its website or smart phone application.

During 2017, Kahramaa completed all work in the workplace, services and projects for nearly 60 million working hours without any occupational diseases, and carried out more than 100 field inspections of project operations to ensure that occupational health and environment standards conform to national legal requirements and global standards.

Kahramaa is the incubator of creativity and innovation in the framework of the foundation’s endeavor to establish a culture of creativity and innovation in the work.

Kahramaa has won many local and international awards in 2017, ensuring its excellence in its various fields of work and working according to innovative mechanisms and strategies that ensure continuity of achievement and turn challenges into opportunities and initiatives.
