DOHA: Three ISL Qatar students have achieved International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma results which have placed them in the top 15 percent of students worldwide.
“Our three top students exemplify traits critical for success with the academically-rigorous diploma,” said ISL Qatar IB Coordinator, Joe Hamkari.
“They are organised and hard-working. They are focussed on their studies and put in the time necessary to achieve their goals. These traits, as well as the ability to reflect on their work and communicate well is critical to IB diploma success.”
The highest scoring student, Kurdish Taban Napaki achieved 40 points, something accomplished by fewer than 4 percent of students worldwide.
Inspired by her parents who are scientists, Taban joined ISL Qatar two years ago from Australia with the goal of becoming a physician.
Her success with her IB higher subjects in biology and chemistry and extended essay in biology will help her achieve these goals. She looks forward to returning to Australia to attend medical school. In her valedictory speech during the recent graduation ceremony, Taban thanked the school and staff for supporting her in her educational journey.
Attaining 39 points, co-valedictorian, Majed Bou Ghanem from Lebanon, gained a scholarship for the highly-selective NYU Abu Dhabi. The university is rapidly emerging as an international centre of research, scholarship and artistic advancement requires a weekend at the school, sampling classes, and engaging in one-on-one discussions with faculty members as part of the application process.
Fluent in English and Arabic, Majed delivered his valedictory speech in Arabic and said, “If our homeland is the best school, our school was the best home for us.”
Bryony Charleson who achieved 38 diploma points, also won the school’s Community, Action and Global Citizenship Award for demonstrating leadership, responsibility and action in humanitarian and environmental matters locally and internationally.
Involved in community service activities, Bryony’s special interest was in the Kindred Project in Nabugabo, Uganda, which she used as a basis for her extended essay, which focused on world studies, health and development and for which she received top marks. Bryony is also passionate about ballet and performed at the 2013 graduation ceremony. She will study nursing at Glasgow Caledonian University.
According to recent research by the IB, universities worldwide “rate the IB diploma higher than other qualifications based on the breadth of the curriculum development of critical thinking, time-management and communication skills and motivation of students.”
Founded in 2008, ISL Qatar is an IB World School, authorised to offer IB Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programmes. It is part of the ISL Group which has additional schools in London and Surrey, the UK and recently celebrated its 40th anniversary of educational excellence.
