New York: The State of Qatar reiterated support for the establishment of a nuclear and WMD-Free Zone in the Middle East, as a top priority for the States of the region for being an essential element of regional security.
This came in the statement of the State of Qatar made by Brigadier-General (Air), H E Hassan Saleh Al Nisf, Chairman of the National Committee for the Prohibition of Weapons (NCPW).
Brigadier-General (Air), H E Hassan Saleh Al Nisf, who is also the head of the delegation of the State of Qatar to the Session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2020 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which kicked off at the UN headquarters in New York yesterday.
In the statement, the State of Qatar said that Article VI of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons remains a major and controversial issue, despite the passage of 50 years since the entry into force of the Treaty, stressing the need for a genuine commitment and a clear timetable that realizes the will of Member States reflected in the adoption of the NPT in July 2017.
Brigadier-General (Air) Hassan Saleh Al Nisf expressed the belief that the vast majority of the commitments contained in the package of decisions and resolutions adopted in 1995 remain unfulfilled, especially with regard to the resolution on the Middle East, noting the attempts to impede the implementation of that resolution and even trying to remove it from the agenda of the Review Conferences despite that the fact that this resolution was an essential part of the deal of the indefinite extension of the Treaty.
