Doha Municipality celebrates 60th anniversary

Doha: Minister of Municipality H E Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie has expressed his deep pride on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Doha Municipality.

He said that the Municipality made remarkable achievements during its long journey since its establishment on January 1, 1963 under the name ‘Qatar Municipality’.

The Minister said that this occasion serves as a motivation for Doha Municipality and all its employees, to continue work and perseverance and redouble joint efforts with all governmental and non-governmental sectors, in order to ensure the upgrading and improvement of the diverse municipal services system and the promotion of urban development.

The Minister of Municipality underlined that Doha city, which is the front and capital of the State, has been, over the past years and since its establishment, an important destination for hosting many local, regional and international events.

He said that Doha hosts the headquarters of the Arab Cities Award, which is one of the institutions of the Arab Towns Organization, since the establishment of the award in 1983. 

The Minister added that Doha was chosen for Capital of Culture in the Islamic World due to its ancient history and legacy.

He said that the pivotal role of Doha city qualified it to obtain membership in the Global Network of Learning Cities from the Unesco Institute for Lifelong Learning, which strengthened its international role as a city that supports learning and its goals.

The Minister noted that Doha was accredited by the World Health Organization as a healthy city, among the eight Qatari cities, to become the first country in the Middle East for all its cities to receive this title from the World Health Organization. 

He thanked all the directors and officials of the municipality who have successively managed it since the establishment, as they had clear fingerprints and great contributions to the development and prosperity of Doha city.

Director of Doha Municipality Mansour Ajran Al Buainain on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of Doha Municipality said that following the directive of the Minister of Municipality, municipal work system, monitoring and inspection mechanisms are being developed to enhance the municipal services. He said that the move aims at providing municipal services, expanding the use of modern technologies, encouraging creative initiatives, and continuing to develop community partnership, in accordance with Qatar National Vision 2030, the National Development Strategy, and the sustainable strategy of the Ministry of Municipality.

He added that the Doha Municipality aims to develop a mechanism for monitoring and inspection of vital sites to monitor and correct violations related to the public hygiene law and infringements on State property and other municipal laws, as well as to intensify inspection campaigns on food establishments to ensure safe and sound food for all consumers.

Al Buainain thanked all the affiliates of the Doha Municipality, including directors, heads of departments, employees and workers in all administrative units of the municipality, for their outstanding role and continuous efforts to achieve the strategy of the Ministry of Municipality, which aims to improve municipal work.

Doha Municipality celebrates on January 1, 2023, the 60th anniversary of its establishment as the oldest municipality in the Qatar, according to Law No. (11) of 1963 organizing Qatar Municipality, amended by Law No. (15) of 1963, which included changing the name of Qatar Municipality to Doha Municipality.

Since its inception, Doha Municipality made many achievements, taking into account the facilitation and speedy completion of transactions and reviews in everything related to municipal services, through organised scientific planning, and supported those plans and programmes with the necessary legislation and laws to preserve those gains.

Doha Municipality, represented by all its departments and sections, continues to implement plans, projects and activities that contribute to achieving the mission and objectives of the Ministry of Municipality by achieving quality and excellence in providing services and improving the quality of life.
