Doha: Qatar’s Olympic medallist Tijan Ahmed, partnered by Abdullah Nasim, yesterday got off to a flying start in the West Asia Beach Volleyball Zonal Tour when they outplayed their Saudi Arabian opponents in straight sets.
The Qatari pair was too strong for Ali Mahfouz and Hassan Alabdulbaqi in their Group A encounter in the afternoon at the Aspire Zone Beach Volleyball Courts where the hosts prevailed with a scoreline of 21-12, 21-13.
Also yesterday, Oman beat Jordan 2-0 (21-14, 21-15) while Iraq lost to Palestine 0-2 (22-24, 18-21) in a thriller.
In the opening session at the picturesque venue, Saudi Arabia lost to Syria 1-2 (17-21, 24-22, 10-15), Palestine beat Jordan 2-1 (21-16, 20-22, 15-13) while Oman clinched an easy win over Iraq 2-0 (21-11, 21-6).
Today at 10:00am, the Qatari pair will take on their Syrian counterparts at the same venue while Oman meet Palestine.
Jordan and Palestine face off in the third match of the day.
The knockout stage will start in the afternoon session which kicks off at 2:00pm.
