DOHA: Qatar’s Savio Nayak’s produced a late strike as the hosts beat Turkey 1-0 in their World Hockey League clash at Al Rayyan Stadium.

Nayak’s goal with two minutes to go helped Qatar to their second win in the tournament. On Wednesday, Qatar beat Oman 4-3.

The Qatari match-winner missed four chances in the tough match that helped Qatar to keep their hopes alive of advancing in the tournament.

Nayak scored the only goal of the match off the sixth penalty corner.

Qatar, who gained Test status in February from FIH, the world governing body, got three penalty corners in each half but only managed to convert off the last one.

Turkey were unlucky as one of their penalty corner shots hit the goalpost and bounced back.

In another match yesterday, Oman held on to win 4-3 against Sri Lanka.

Oman, ranked seventh in Asia were 4-0 up in the first match at Al Rayyan Stadium, and survived a late fightback from Sri Lanka to win their match.

A total of five teams are competiting in the World Hockey League in Qatar.

The tournament, which started on Tuesday, will conclude tomorrow.

Only one team will qualify for the next stage of the competition.

The event is the eighth Round 1stage to take place so far, with Poland, Ukraine, Bangladesh, Ireland, Austria, Egpyt, Scotland, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, Chila and USA advancing to Round 2, after strong performances at respective events in Prague, Singapore, Cardiff, Acca Lousada, Port of Spain and Chula Vista.
