Doha: The Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani inaugurated the Labour City on Sunday at Musaismeer near the Industrial Area, which is the largest labour city in Qatar and the Gulf region.
The Labour City is just 14 kilometres from Doha Center and 13 kilometres from the Hamad International Airport.
Built over an area of 1,100,000 square meters, the new Labor City can accommodate 100,000 workers. The Special Engineering Office oversaw its completion and implementation over almost three years.
The Labour City is divided into two parts: The entertainment and business district, which includes a commercial centre and a market with 200 shops catering to the tastes and cultures of its inhabitants, a cricket ground, a theatre, which can accommodate 17,000 people and will host cultural events and festivals, and four modern cinema halls.
The second section of the City hosts the residential complexes for workers and contains 55 buildings, places of worship, a medical clinic and parking lot for buses.
The accommodation also includes essential services like laundry and includes green areas and wide spaces, which can be used for daily exercise and physical activities.
The city has also been provided with a number of public telephone booths as well as Wi-Fi-equipped centers to give residents a chance to communicate with their families and their loved ones at home.
The City includes two mosques and a large mosque for Friday noon prayer which can accommodate 6,500 worshipers, the second largest mosque in Qatar. In addition, the City is very close to the religions complex.
The City also has an integrated network of surveillance cameras connected to the two police centres allocated to provide security and emergency response. It also features nine entrances on all four sides.
Occupying 2,000 square meters, the medical clinic seeks to meet the medical needs of workers and was designed to deal with emergency cases. Patients who require further treatment will be transferred to the new health center or to the new workers Hospital, currently under construction, and due to be completed in the first quarter of next year.
