Doha: Qatar University, College of Pharmacy (QU-CPH) held a number of online orientation sessions for its incoming undergraduate and graduate students during the first week of classes for the academic year 21/22.
QU-CPH also welcomed new admissions into the general pharmacy and foundation program were admitted this academic year at the CPH. Dr. Mohamad Diab, Dean of QU-CPH, Dr. Maguy El-Hajj, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Alla El-Awaisi, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and all QU-CPH faculty, welcomed the students.
Dr. Mohamad Diab commented, “I am pleased to welcome General Pharmacy and First Year Pharmacy Students to the College of Pharmacy Annual Orientation. In alliance with Qatar National Health Strategy the College is proud to accept the biggest number of first professional year pharmacy students to its premises.
“The CPH family has been working hard all year to prepare and welcome our students to a journey full of excitement and education where they will graduate as competent and skilled Pharmacists ready to take the Pharmacy profession to the next level and graduating students with a better approach to patient-centered care, enriches students experience, optimizes integration between courses and updates the overall assessment plan.”
Dr. Maguy said, “I am very happy to meet virtually the new batch of first year pharmacy students including the first male undergraduate pharmacy students at QU CPH, and I look forward to meet them face to face on campus when they attend their professional skills labs. I would like to wish them all the best for becoming competent pharmacists ready to advance pharmacy practice and improve patient outcomes in Qatar and in the region.”
“We are delighted to welcome our new students to CPH family whether in the foundation, general pharmacy year or first professional year in the pharmacy Major. I would like to encourage the students to enjoy their adventure they are about to undertake and start thinking from now as a healthcare professional and as a pharmacist. Our students are great ambassadors to our college and we expect all students to adhere to CPH core values which are: Professionalism, Respect, Commitment, Impact, Innovation, Partnership during their journey with at the College,” said Dr. Alla.
QU-CPH faculty members also greeted the P1 students before inviting the students to introduce themselves.
Marwa Elshazly, Qatar Pharmacy Undergraduate Society (QPhUS) Vice President introduced the concept of QPhUS and shared different ways in which the P1 students can become actively involved. Professional year 2 (P2) students provided tips and tricks on how to succeed in P1. QU CPH Associate Professor and Head of Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Practice Dr. Ahmed Awaisu delivered a presentation on plagiarism and academic dishonesty.
QU CPH Teaching Assistant Myriam Jaam discussed tips for studying and time management followed by information from CPH Learning Support Specialist Mrs. Reem El Hage on the CPH student support system. QU CPH Teaching Assistant Mrs. Farhat Naz Hussain delivered an interactive presentation aimed at discovering each student’s unique learning style, before inviting QU CPH Teaching Assistant Mrs. Reem Al Mannai to introduce the College’s innovative technological teaching aids: Blackboard© and the video-capture program Echo360®. Dr. Hager El-Geed delivered the students first mock online test to familiarize them with the platforms used for assessment.
The orientation event was well-received by the P1 students. QU CPH delivered an orientation session to welcome ten Master of Science in Pharmacy – MSc (Pharm) and two Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students who were admitted this academic year. At the graduate studies orientation, Head of Research and Graduate Studies for Pharmacy, Dr. Fatima Mraiche, welcomed the new students to the College and gave them an overview of their study plan and life as a graduate student. Dean Dr. Mohamad Diab and QU Health Director for Research and Graduate Studies, Dr. Feras Alali also greeted the students. Students were provided with an introduction to the Graduate Learning Services. The event was completed by testimonials from a current MSc student and CPH alumni. Additionally, fourteen students entered their full-time Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) internships this August after a rigorous admissions process. Director of the PharmD program, Dr Bridget Javed, led the orientation activities and provided an overview about the PharmD program, an introduction to placements in all the HMC hospitals in Qatar, updated. Students also received an orientation at HMC on the Cerner application and Covid policy and procedures.
