Mixed fortunes for Qatar at Chess Olympiad in India

Doha: The Qatar national chess team defeated Papua New Guinea, ranked 168 in the world, 4-0 before losing to Denmark in their second match at the 44th Olympiad in Chennai, India.

Qatar team comprised of International Master Hussein Aziz, FIDE Master Ghanem Al Sulaiti, Youssef Muhammad Al Mutawa and Abdullah Al Hamid who displayed a high level of competition during the two rounds. 

The Chess Olympiad sees the participation of 185 teams from 180 countries، 

The biggest chess tournament of the year, the Olympiad was inaugurated last Thursday in the presence of Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and a number of dignitaries.

The Papua New Guinea team is ranked 168th in the world while Denmark are ranked 27th. Denmark beat Qatar with a score of 3.5-5.

The Qatar Chess Federation has been a regular participant in the Olympiad since 1986. 

Mohammed Al Madhahka, the President of the Federation confirmed that the goal of participation is to increase gain experience and raise the classification of Qatar national team players.
