DOHA: Qatar Charity (QC) has distributed 2,300 Ramadan food baskets to needy families and orphans in Jakarta, Bogor, Aceh, Garut and Yogyakarta in Indonesia.
QC staff and beneficiaries gathered at a ceremony to collect baskets.
QC usually distributes food baskets one or two days before Ramadan to enable beneficiary families to prepare good meals on the first day of the holy month. Each basket contained rice, oil, sugar, syrup, yogurt, fava beans, soya, dates, tea, coffee, and honey.
QC has a special Iftar program this year in Indonesia. It consists of 35,000 meals at a cost of QR3,59,000 in addition to 2,300 baskets distributed to fasting families.
The project is implemented in 18 governorates in cooperation with 94 affiliated foundations.
Karam Ali, Director, QC Office in Indonesia, said the charity was keen to distribute baskets early, in cooperation with centres founded by QC donors to take part in Iftar activities. QC was also eager to cooperate with local partners to implement the project, he added.
Beneficiaries and local and central government officials expressed pleasure with the project that alleviates the burden on needy families in the holy month.
QC has also launched a new campaign, ‘Ramadan of Smiles. Its estimated cost in and outside Qatar exceeded QR58.2m, up QR14.6m compared to last year’s project. More than two million people are expected to benefit.
In the first quarter of this year, QC implemented 260 projects in Indonesia. Since the opening of its office in 2004, QC activities have included medical care, sponsorships and income-generating and other projects.
