DOHA: Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) yesterday issued a manual for contractors to adopt best practices and prevent damage to cables. The manual is meant to increase their cultural and technical awareness of the safety of electrical cables when executing projects. After conducting detailed studies on network faults during the period 2012-2014, Kahramaa found that cable damage by third parties represented the greater percentage of faults. The faults amounted to 47 percent in 2013, and increased to 53 percent in 2014.

By issuing the manual, Kahramaa aims to ensure the safety of its network. The manual mentions all the requirements for protecting cables, and the technical procedures contractors should observe during excavation.
They can apply for permission for excavation to be provided by updated maps in order to avoid any damage that may affect Kahramaa’s basic infrastructure. Digging without getting permission from the authorities concerned is one of contractors’ malpractices that causes damage to the electricity network and thus may affect many important facilities, including hospitals, ministries and other government and industrial organisations. Kahramaa has appealed to the contractors to abide by the rules and get the required permission before starting excavation works. The manual is available at Kahramaa’s customer service centres, and on its website and accounts on social media platforms.
