Doha: The Student Affairs Department at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI) organised the fifth edition of the “Cultural Day” which is held annually in the holy month of Ramadan to celebrate the cultural, social and linguistic diversity and the richness of cultures which is a unique characteristic of the DI.
The event, in which students from various nationalities participated, included activities and shows that reflected the cultural heritage of their countries, their customs, and their different yet mixed folklore heritage in relation to popular food, costumes, history, languages and dialects.
The activities varied between folkloric performances and various artistic shows such as: the Prophet’s Praise Band (Al Midih Al Nadawi), Qatari crafts, shipbuilding, poetry, folklore rhythms, and competitions.
Iman Al Sulaiti, Executive Director of the Administrative and Financial Division at DI, said that this event is the ideal expression of the richness and diversity of cultures that distinguishes the environment of the DI.
“Such an event brings together students, professors and staff from all over the world. Therefore, this day provides an opportunity to learn about their dialects, costumes, traditions, diverse cultures, and rich heritage.”
She added that the Cultural Day, stems from the centralisation of culture as a bridge of communication and understanding between people. “It is aimed at enriching the values of diversity and interacting closely with cultures, customs and traditions of other countries, through recreational activities that are characterised by fun and positive participation, and it brings a great opportunity for harmony and synergy in this holy month, as students present their countries, and introduce us to things we do not know about on these cultures, or we know little of.”
Nasima Abdeen, Director of Student Affairs Department, pointed out that this event is the best illustration of the richness and variety in cultures that marks and differentiates the DI’s environment.
