DOHA: The Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, H E Dr Ghaith bin Mubarak Al Kuwari, yesterday laid foundation stone for the project entitled ‘Al Utrujjah’ to serve centres for reciting and memorising the Holy Quran and to meet the growing number of learners.

The construction work is expected to be completed within six hundred days, and the department will try as far as possible to finish the project before the scheduled time,” Sheikh Dr. Khalid bin Mohammed bin Ghanem Al Thani, Director General of the General Administration of Awqaf at the ministry said.

The event was attended by a number of Ministry officials and donors of the Waqf. The project allotted in Freej Bin Mahmoud consisting of two buildings containing 112 apartments will cost about QR70.

“The project is one of the important projects of the Ministry of Awqaf as it serves the Holy Quran Education Centers in the country,” he added in a speech during the ceremony, adding that the number of students enrolled in Quran centres are about 20, 000 students.

The official said that the high demand on the Holy Quran centres motivated administration to allocate a special endowment (waqf) for these centers, which will also help the Ministry of Awqaf in its expansion plans to receive more students and raise the quality of education with the best modern means available.

“The coming days will see further progress in services and endowment projects,” Sheikh Dr. Khalid pointed out.

He stressed that the waqf is the third sector in the Islamic economy after the governmental and private sectors, and it is among the pillars on which the society is based in its scientific, social, health, urban and other development.

Talking to media persons, he announced that the Awqaf administration has a five-year plan for the years 2018-2022 for the completion of endowment projects amounting to about QR1bn, which will have various and important revenue to enrich community projects. “The administration currently has a number of projects in progress and others are still in the process of being put forward,” he added
