Doha: A leading fruits and vegetables supplier was caught selling Egyptian oranges as Turkish produce.

The Ministry of Economy and Commerce have registered a violation against the supplier on Saturday.

The ministry noted in a statement today that they found out that Egyptian oranges were first exported to Turkey and there it was repackaged to look like it is from Turkey. This was then exported to Qatar as Turkish oranges.

The statement said that this action is in clear violation of consumer protection laws, which obliges the supplier to clearly state the origin of the product among other information such as its nutritional values.

The violation was found during one of the inspection campaigns that are part of the ministry's effort in ensuring suppliers are committed to their responsibilities according to the consumer protection law. These efforts aim to regulate prices as well as any violations of consumer rights.
