The Peninsula

When the year 2017 comes to a close today, Qatar can look back the year with a great satisfaction and pride.

The nation became more cohesive and well-integrated under the wise leadership of Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani during this year and showed the whole world that no one can undermine the power of Qatari citizen’s nation-building capabilities under any kind of duress.

The love for the nation and its leadership was more evident when the unjust siege was imposed upon its peace-loving people on June 5 this year.

The nation has clocked several achievements during this period and the greatest among them for Qatar this year, of course, is its successful handling of the unjust siege.

The year has given more opportunity for the country to stand together on its own feet with pride and without any prejudice.

A few days into the unjust blockade, the necessary steps were taken by the leadership to support every sector and move fast towards self-sufficiency.

The country was successful in mobilising all its energies of citizens and residents alike to innovate and find alternatives to overcome all difficulties in a short span of time.

Apart from the successful handling of the situation, Qatar has also achieved important landmarks this year in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 in the fields of transportation, infrastructure, construction, global peace, competitiveness, and combating the financing of terrorism and money laundering and so on. All these efforts earned the country the confidence and recognition of international institutions and bodies.

In 2017, Qatar witnessed the inauguration of Laffan Refinery 2 and the first production of Al Shaheen Oil Field, one of the largest offshore oil fields in the world. The year also saw the opening of Hamad Port in September at Umm Al Houl and the launch of new direct shipping lines with major ports across the globe.

Notable progress was also made by Ashghal in the infrastructure sector irrespective of the hardships during the second half of the year. Several new roads were opened before the start of the new academic year in September. Qatar has also managed to open new air routes to surpass the air siege and the national carrier Qatar Airways won accolades during the year for its achievements.

In the field of knowledge, the opening of Qatar National Library is a milestone in the history with over one million books and manuscripts available.

In the healthcare sector, the country opened new state-of-the art hospitals and healthcare centres during the year.

In the nutshell, it becomes clear that Qatar is moving ahead faster in its march with determination and pride under the wise leadership towards its noble goals at all levels and in all sectors irrespective of the unjust siege.
