Doha: World No. 2 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus will be defending the Qatar Total Open title she won last year at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, the organisers said here yesterday.
Top stars on the WTA Tennis Tour will come to the Qatari capital next month to participate in the 56-player draw.
Heading to Doha for the February 10 to 16 event are a galaxy fo stars which includes World No. 1 Serena Williams.
Also playing in Doha will be French Open champion Li Na, Agnieszka Radwanksa, Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova, Sara Errani, Jelena Jankovic, Angelique Kerber and Caroline Wozniacki. 43 players are directly entered into the field, with eight qualifiers and five wildcards.
The top eight seeds will be given a first round bye. Total prize money for the event is $2,440,070.
First held in 2001, the Doha event was the first professional women’s tennis tournament staged in the Middle East and today it is a WTA Premier 5 event – bringing with it the greatest names in the sport.
