Afghanistan trounce Qatar in Asian Beach Soccer qualifiers

Doha: Hosts Qatar went down fighting 7-3 to Afghanistan 7-3 in their opening match of the 2013 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Asian qualifiers at Katara Beach yesterday.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 hosts now have a tough qualification  on hand now having lost their first match in the 16-nation tournament. 

The Nenem coached side have to win both their group matches to keep their slender hopes alive.

Today they take on Australia who stunned 2011 Asian runners-up Oman 6-4.

For Qatar and Afghanistan this is the first time they are taking part in the Beach Soccer World Cup Asian qualifiers.

In the other results today, defending champions Japan overcame a tough challenge from Thailand while registering a close 4-1 win. 

The UAE-Saudi Arabia turned  to be a thriller with the former winning 6-5.

Meanwhile Iran punished a helpless Philippines 20-0.

In the other results, Palestine edged past Uzbekistan 6-5, while Lebanon managed to get full points against Bahrain in a 5-3 win and China trounced debutants Iraq 8-3.
