DOHA: Six Qatari players will be competing at the Qatar Open Table Tennis Championship, a Qatar Table Tennis Association (QTTA) official announced yesterday.
During a press conference where Qtel was officially announced as a sponsor for the 5-day tournament, the top event will feature world and Olympic champions.
A total of 420 players from 36 countries will be participating at the Women’s Sports Committee Hall at Aspire Zone.
In last year’s competition, also held in Doha, China took all four titles, winning the Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles and Women’s Doubles. Xiu Xing lifted the Men’s Singles title, after beating compatriot Wang Hao in the final.
Also, Mohammed Abdulla, General Secretary of QTTA, said that the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) will hold their Executive Committee Meeting during the tournament.
Abdulla said: “The ITTF Executive Board will be coming to Doha and a big meeting will take place on February 23.”
He added that it will be second time the meeting will be held in Doha and that all full members of the ITTF Board will be present.
The Qatar Open Table Tennis Championship will take place from February 20 to 24. The qualification rounds will begin on February 20 and 21.
The event will consist of four categories: Women’s Doubles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles and Men’s Singles. All finals will take place on February 24.
There is also a U-21 category for boys and girls. THE PENINSULA
