DOHA: Brazilian striker Nilmar scored a hat-trick as Al Rayyan survived a scare to ease past Al Sailiyah 7-3 in the Qatar Stars League (QSL) yesterday.
Al Sailiyah saw themselves 3-0 down in the first 17 minutes. However, they rallied to level the score midway in the second half, before Al Rayyan scored four to put the match beyond Al Sailiyah’s reach.
Among the scorers at the Al Rayyan Stadium, Tabata netted twice, Abdulkarim Salem Al Ali and Ahmed Alaaeldin contributed to put Diego Aguirre’s side back on winning ways.
In other QSL matches yesterday, Al Kharaitiyat crushed Al Arabi 4-0.
Also, yesterday, Qatar SC were held to a 1-1 draw against Al Khor.
In the first match of yesterday’s action, Al Rayyan should have taken the lead after creating numerous chances in the first three minutes.
However, Al Rayyan were rewarded with a penalty and Brazilian attacking midfielder Rodrigo Tabata made no mistake from the spot, slotting the ball in the middle of the goal in the 12th minute.
After Nilmar doubled the lead four minutes later in the 16th minute, the former Villarreal striker found himself on the scoresheet again to give Al Rayyan a 3-0 lead.
Al Sailiyah, bottom of the QSL standings, did not let the scoreline affect them and pulled a goal back.
In the second half, Al Rayyan players were shocked when Al Sailiyah scored two quick goals to equalise.
Beli Dagano and captain Marcelo Tavares scored the goals for the home side, shortly after the half-hour mark.
Despite squandering their lead, Ali restored Al Rayyan’s lead with a diving header in the 64th minute.
Aguirre’s side raised their tempo and in the 80th minute Alaadeldin gave Al Rayyan a two-goal cushion.
Tabata got his second of the match when the Brazilian chipped the Al Sailiyah goalkeeper late the in the second half.
Deep into stoppage time, Nilmar, who joined Al Rayyan in the summer, grabbed his hat-trick with an easy tap in.
Al Rayyan are now fourth with 29 points, eleven points behind QSL points leaders Al Sadd.
Players and staff will not have much time to receover as QSL action resumes on February 19 with all teams competing on a busy day of football.
