Doha: The Criminal Court sentenced two Asians to one year in jail for trying to buy subsidised food items using forged ration coupons intended for Qataris.
They will be deported to their countries after serving their jail term. The ration system aims to provide Qataris with essential items, including rice, sugar, milk and edible oil, at highly subsidised prices. Last year, smart cards replaced the traditional paper coupons that were issued to ration card holders every month.
The Asians forged an official seal, put it on coupons and went to a distribution centre. But an official there found out that the coupons were fake and alerted police.
The Public Prosecution referred the duo to the court after charging them with forging the seal of the Central Tenders Committee and trying to purchase basic supplies.
One of the convicts visited a shop to buy cooking oil with three coupons that had different names and numbers. The second convict claimed that someone had sold him a coupon for QR275 riyals.
