DOHA: A 10-year-old expatriate girl, Ala’a, who has been living with a kidney disease most of her young life, received a kidney donated by her uncle, in the first paediatric kidney transplant in the country.
Surgeons at Hamad General Hospital (HGH) successfully performed the surgery earlier this month.
Both Ala’a and her uncle Badr were discharged from hospital five days after the procedure and are recovering well, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) said in a statement yesterday.
Dr Abdullah Al Kaabi, Head of Paediatric Nephrology Section at HMC said the procedure, the first of its kind in Qatar, involved a multi-disciplinary team from HGH including surgeons, anaesthetists, radiologists, laboratory specialists and intensive care clinicians.
“Preparations for the first paediatric kidney transplant including treatment and follow-up protocols, performed in line with the best international standards, took around six months,” said Al Kaabi said.
Dr Yousef Al Maslamani, Director of the Qatar Organ Transplant Center and the Medical Director of HGH said the operation signalled the growth and expansion of the organization’s organ transplantation program.
“The centre started kidney transplants for adults in 1986, developed a liver transplant programme early in 2012 and now our paediatric kidney transplant program has been launched,” Al Maslamani said.
Dr Mohamed Al Janahi, Chairman of the Paediatric Department at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), said the pediatric kidney transplant program will meet the urgent need of children living with kidney failure in Qatar.
“The successful launch of this program will make it easier for the families of sick children to have them treated locally, in addition to the easy postoperative care and follow-up we can offer,” he said. The Peninsula
