Doha: Members of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) have asked for the establishment of an independent authority to coordinate the implementation of Green Qatar project.

The project, which started in 2006, was interrupted after 2009, Mohammad Ali Azbah, CMC member said. He blamed the new road plans for the interruption of the Green Qatar project. There are 77 public parks in the country, 54 parks are under construction while 17 new parks have been proposed.

The project has to be revived with the collaboration of Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning to build green belts around the country and for the preservation of the environment. Awareness about environment issues also need to be raised through programmes in schools and involving the private sector in the project.

Under a new plan of supplying 1,500 trees, 10 schools will be given the services of trees every year, while five private farms will also be encouraged to take up more initiatives.

“The development of green belts should be done in parallel to infrastructural developments such as roads and houses. This project needs new plans and a clear strategy. People will need to see a green Qatar when they come here during 2022,” Nasir Abdullah Al Mirakhi, said.
