QU designs cloud to cool your corner of the Earth Tuesday, 22 March 2011 05:06

Dr Saud Abdul Ghani, head of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Qatar University, unveiled a design and construction of an artificial cloud to shade and cool the open playgrounds to be used in the 2022 World Cup in Doha. He told a local Arabic daily that the project will be executed in collaboration with Qatar Science and Technology Park.

He said the artificial cloud will move by remote control, made of 100 percent light carbonic materials, fuelled by four solar-powered engines and it will fly high to protect direct and indirect sun rays to control temperatures at the open playgrounds.

He said the initial model of the cloud cost $500,000 but the cost will decrease upon launching the commercial models which could also be used at beaches, car parking by using the mobile phone.

I do believe before 2022, all perceived and conceivable 'lapses' will be fine-tuned and made 'perfect' for the event. its a welcome development for especially parking lots. an innovation in the right direction.

Really? How about a dome? DUH Would have saved a lot too. Wait for it to fall down. I don't think I would go to anything with this flying over my head. :P

Great idea in theory but Qatar in June/July is 105 degrees average. Just shading a part of the field might drop it down to 95-100 degrees. And what happens if it's windy out? Everyone gets to soak up 2+ hours of sunlight watching players passing out. Just build domes and talk to these guys about their A/C setup www.skidubai.com/

I think its a good IDEA. But I hope they don't wait til the games to try it out...and @Ben Johnson I think the fans will be moving too fast to cause any distraction...It'll probably look like nothing. Go put a fan in a window and turn it on high then look at it's shadow...you won't see anything moving
