The Doha Centre for Media Freedom (DCMF) has taken an urgent international initiative to reveal, document and follow up violations and serious crimes committed by the Israeli occupation against journalists in the Gaza Strip.
The initiative aims at confronting the United Nations and Unesco in the face of international public opinion, with their responsibility to protect journalists in Palestine. This confirms DCMF’s message and policy mentioned in its preamble.
The brutal and surly assault on Gaza that is driven by a despotic clique in Israel in full view of the world, has stirred feelings and triggered condemnation of the atrocities carried out by Israeli forces in Gaza Strip, which has been under siege for years and the thousands of martyrs who continue to fall, including 13 journalists who represent various media platforms.
The DCMF has been focusing on deliberate violations against journalists. The violations are in breach of the press freedom principle included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
In a statement that the centre released on Tuesday, the DCMF demanded that the UN take firm decisions supposed to restore its credibility on the issue of growing violations. The statement said that the world body should act in a manner consistent with its charters and principles, as press freedom is considered its base for the achievement of goals of the post-2015 agenda.
The centre’s message focused on the silence of Arab and international organisations. It especially pointed to the general secretary of the UN who took Israel’s side because it lost one soldier.
The DCMF has called for pushing the Israeli government after 13 journalists and a driver working for a news agency were killed. Besides, 20 journalists were injured and around 12 media offices damaged in the Gaza war.
The splendid role played by DCMF to form an international media front to face Israeli transgressions in Gaza needs the support of all stakeholders and observers of press freedom in the world, so that violators can be punished through international trials.
We shall underline and salute the role played by DCMF in highlighting what is going on in Gaza. We also appreciate its focus on freedom of expression, which is considered the source of human rights. It should be reinforced by protecting journalists.
