KABUL: A roadside bomb yesterday killed 10 people, including eight policemen, in the northeastern Afghan province of Kunar, officials said. The blast in Dangam district bordering Pakistan hit a vehicle carrying four police officers who were injured in an earlier roadside bomb and being taken to a hospital, Dangam district Governor Hamish Gulab Shinwari said. “Theywere put on a passing civilian vehicle by colleagues, but the vehicle struck another landmine laid by the Taliban.” The two civilians were also inside the vehicle. A woman in the vehicle was seriously injured. No group or individual claimed responsibility.
Taliban bomb four schools in tribal belt
PESHAWAR: Suspected Taliban militants bombed four boys’ schools in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal belt yesterday, officials said, in the Islamists’ latest attack on government educational institutions. No one was injured in the blasts in Mohmand tribal district, where officials said Taliban attacks have destroyed more than 100 schools. “Militants from Tehreek-e-Taliban Mohmand (TTM) blew up the four schools at around 2.30am (2130 GMT),” an intelligence official said. “The militants planted locally made explosives to dynamite the buildings. The schools were completely destroyed.” Militants opposed to co-education have destroyed hundreds of schools, mostly for girls, in recent years.
80pc rise in cases of measles
ISLAMABAD: An increase of 80 percent was recorded in measles cases across Pakistan. In November 2012, 247 cases were reported in 17 districts compared with 137 in 16 districts in the preceding month, said an official. The research group Fafen visited 91 district health offices to collect data for November. It said the Karachi district reported most cases (149), followed by Loralai (17) and Dera Bugti (16).
Kidnapped trio found dead in Baluchistan
Islamabad: The bodies of three people kidnapped about a month ago were found in the capital, police said yesterday. The victims were abducted in a militants’ attack in the southwestern province of Baluchistan and shot dead in the ‘Bugra’ area.
