ISLAMABAD: Contrary to its rhetoric, the Pakistan People’s Party government appears uninterested about taking steps to ensure citizens receive expeditious justice.
Despite a lapse of eight months, and reminders, it has shown no interest in providing the judiciary with around Rs31 billion for human resources and infrastructure development, leaving it helpless while a massive backlog of cases piles up.
In stark contrast, the prime minister has spent close to Rs37bn in six months to lure voters as the general elections approach fast.
Official documents reveal that Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, in a meeting of the Law and Justice Commission on May 19, 2012, asked the government to sanction Rs31bn for strengthening human resources and infrastructure of the district judiciary in all four provinces. However, despite two reminders to the premier’s principal secretary, the government has not responded.
