Doha: Relief teams from Qatar Red Crescent are continuing their efforts to help the wounded in Gaza Strip following a devastating Israeli military offensive.

The QRC office in Gaza Strip has identified the items needed most in the health sector. The head of the office, Dr Akram Nassar, said orders had been issued for purchase of a large number of medical devices and equipment worth $200,000 for distribution to hospitals in Gaza. These include X-ray imaging devices, equipment for intensive care rooms, electrocardiography devices, equipment for operation theatres, emergency vehicles, beds for patients, and anaesthesia devices, Dr Nassar said.

Steps have been initiated for purchase of other medical equipment worth $1.5m. All this equipment is expected to increase the efficiency and the capacity of hospitals in Gaza to serve the sick and the injured.

On the role played by the Medical Rehabilitation Section in Al Amal Hospital since the beginning of the Israeli aggression, Dr Wael Makki, general manager of the hospital, said Al Amal was the only hospital in Gaza Strip providing medical rehabilitation after the Israeli forces destroyed Al Wafa Hospital in Gaza.

“We have received 23 injured persons with varied injuries, including head injuries, spinal fractures and cases requiring amputation.”

Dr Makki said the Medical Rehabilitation Section, which QRC launched in July 2013, had contributed significantly to treatment of the wounded during the aggression, calling for the expansion of the section so that it could serve a larger number of wounded Palestinians, whose number has exceeded 10,000.
