DOHA: Katara yesterday launched Solidarity Festival in support of Gaza, in cooperation with Qatari Red Crescent, Qatar TV, Al Rayyan TV and q.media.
Thousands attended the festival at Katara Amphitheatre. It comprised reciting history, songs and exhibitions by Qatari, Palestinian and Saudi artists.
In response to a campaign by QRC and Katara to collect donations for the people of Gaza, banks, companies and individuals donated more than QR57m at the opening of the festival. Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Al Thani directed Dar Al Sharq to donate QR250,000. Donations can be made by phone or at any of QRC’s check-points and offices.
The General Manager of Katara, Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, said the festival was held to aid the Palestinian people in Gaza living through a horrific humanitarian crisis.
He said the festival also reflected Katara’s role in supporting humanitarian causes that promote charitable and aid work. Addressing the opening ceremony, he stressed that the humanitarian campaign to help the people in Gaza will not stop. He thanked restaurants in Katara and Aspire Zone which supported the charitable work and said Katara will make an announcement tomorrow on the amount raised during the campaign, which was organised in cooperation with Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF), Eid Charity, and other organisations.
