Blatter reviews 2022 preparations

DOHA: FIFA President Sepp Blatter yesterday called on the Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and discussed football matters besides exchanging notes on the organisation of 2022 FIFA World Cup to be held in Qatar.

During the course of the one-hour meeting, Blatter praised Qatar’s role in pushing for social change through football.

In a message posted on the fifa.com website, Blatter was quoted as saying: “I was very pleased to meet today the highest political authority – the Emir of Qatar. It was great to see his and Qatar’s commitment to use the 2022 FIFA World Cup to achieve positive social change and to promote the host country and region.”

Blatter added: “Qatar takes its responsibility as hosts seriously. We also discussed the importance of further developing football in the region.”

The Emir and FIFA President reviewed the existing relations of cooperation between Qatar and the world body. Topics of discussion also included ways of enhancing cooperation between Qatar and FIFA.

The meeting also reviewed the achievements made on projects related to the organization of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The meeting, which took place at Al Bahr Palace, was also attended by H H Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Personal Representative of the the Emir, and FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke.

This was Blatter’s first trip to Qatar since his Doha visit last November when he met H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Thani, who headed the Q22 bid team. Qatar won the rights to host the 2022 World Cup at a historic FIFA Executive Committee vote in December 2010.
