DOHA: Doha is one of 21 finalists of the New7Wonders Cities global campaign.
Organisers announced on Monday the finalists which will advance to the next round of the campaign to be determined through global election.
Doha is the only city in the GCC short-listed from over 1,200 nominees from over 220 countries.
Announcing the finalists, New7Wonders Foundation Founder-President, Bernard Weber, said the diversity of the remaining cities is “remarkable in terms of regional geography and urban culture.”
Other finalists are Bangkok, Barcelona, Beirut, Chicago, Durban, Havana, Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur, La Paz, London, Mendoza, Mexico City, Mumbai, Perth, Quito, Reykjavik, Saint Petersburg, Seoul, Shenzhen and Vigan.
Voting for the New7Wonders Cities will run across two more elimination phases culminating on December 7 when the winners will be named.
Started two years ago, New7Wonders Cities is the third global vote and follows the New7Wonders of the World and New7Wonders of Nature campaigns.
Established in 2001, the foundation aims at contributing to the protection of the world’s human-built and natural heritage and fostering respect for the planet’s diversity.
Those who want to vote for Doha in the penultimate voting stage that runs until October 7 may cast votes via the website new7wonders.com via the iPhone and Android apps, international telephone voting lines and via national SMS where available. After October 7, the list will be narrowed down to 14, and the Official New7Wonders Cities will be revealed.The Peninsula
